Eight people were killed and another 10 injured when a church van drove through a stop sign, across four lanes of a well-traveled southwest Florida road and into a canal, Highway Patrol officers said Monday.
The crash occurred shortly after midnight.

The van was affiliated with a church in the Fort Pierce area, and the group was coming home from a visit to Fort Myers, CNN reported.
Eighteen people were on board the van, which was traveling in Glades County, just east of Lake Okeechobee, the Associated Press reported. The driver and seven passengers were confirmed dead, said Lt. Gregory Bueno, the AP reported.

A 4-year-old, the only child in the group, was taken to a local hospital for treatment and is now in stable condition, CNN said. The others taken for treatment have been listed in conditions that range from serious to stable, while one has been released, AP reported.
