(DAILYSTAR) — BEIRUT: Militants from ISIS stormed Damascus’ Palestinian neighborhood of Yarmouk Wednesday and took over “wide areas” of the devastated, besieged area from rebel fighters.
The assault came as a coalition of insurgents in the south said they had seized the last remaining border crossing with Jordan from regime forces. The developments came as the shadowy leader of the Nusra Front released an audio tape in which he pledged that his Al-Qaeda-affiliated group would not seek to monopolize power in the northwestern provincial capital of Idlib, which fell to insurgents over the weekend.
Anti-regime activists said ISIS militants appeared to be gaining the upper hand in Yarmouk after fierce, daylong clashes with a local militia, Aknaf Beit al-Maqdis, made up of Palestinians and Syrians.
