An Oklahoma woman is behind bars after going to a funeral home and allegedly slashing the corpse of a woman who reportedly used to date her boyfriend.
Shaynna Lauren Sims, who also goes by Shaynna Smith, was being held in lieu of $20,000 bond on a misdemeanor complaint of illegal dissection after her arrest, jail records show.
Sims allegedly inflicted a deep cut on the deceased woman’s head from her hairline to the tip of her nose, smeared the cadaver’s makeup and threw clumps of hair onto the floor at the Moore Funeral Home in Tulsa.
The dead woman’s mother told police she grew suspicious when she saw Sims with her hands inside the casket. When she approached her daughter’s corpse, Sims fled the chapel.
Shocked mourners and staff called police when they saw the damage to the body.
Sims was later found at the dead woman’s apartment, after reportedly gaining entry by telling grieving relatives she needed to pick up jewelry for the funeral, reports Tulsa World.
Police say she was carrying a pair of scissors, a box cutter and a folding knife with strands of the dead woman’s hair on it.
Those close to both women described them as “frenemies,” both having been involved in a romantic relationship with the same man at different times.
“I was hoping by now this young lady would have talked and given her motivation behind why she did what she did, but apparently she’s keeping that to herself,” said Sgt. Shane Tuell of the Tulsa Police Department.
The funeral home’s director, John Wilson, a mortician for 30 years, said he has never experienced a corpse being compromised.
“It’s really unfortunate that it happened,” said Wilson.
Court records show Sims pleaded guilty to assault and battery on April 15 after taking a plea deal in a child neglect case. She received an 18-month deferred sentence in the matter, according to the newspaper.
