Louie Gohmert: 'Grab what God gives' to save nation

Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Texas, told a National Day of Prayer crowd of believers on Capitol Hill on Thursday that if they wanted a better government, they should elect better leaders.

"You want better people in Congress? Then we have got to understand the source of all our blessings is not in Washington, D.C.," he said. "You are the government ... you are part of the government of the United States of America."

His point?

"When we have a hiring day [elections], you're supposed to have done your job, searched out, examined the applicants ... like you would anytime when you would hire somebody to take over your trillion-dollar business. You want a better government? Then hire better employees," he said.

Gohmert opened his remarks with a hearkening to America's Civil War days, when both sides, North and South, prayed to the same God for battlefield success. He reminded of the many Union losses, and the ultimate recognition by President Lincoln of the need to repent and seek God's forgiveness for sins, in humility – just as America needs to do today.

He then cautioned against Americans relying too much on politicians, rather than God.

"[I hear from] many people, 'Well, if we could just get Congress right, if next time we could get the right president, we could turn things around.' Folks, the adage is true: Democracy ensures the people get [the government] they deserve," Gohmert said.

He then wrapped with this inspiring message: "Too many Americans are not grabbing what God is willing to give. So here today and every day, let us join our hearts, pray without ceasing, that we may, as Lincoln, highly resolve that this nation under God will not perish from the Earth and God will hear your prayers and He will strengthen this country once again."

Gohmert's words were followed by those of Senate chaplain Barry Black, who called for believers to learn the art of unceasing prayer.

"As we slouch toward Gomorrah ... we need as people of faith to make prayer as natural as breathing," he said.
