(NEW YORK DAILY NEWS) The hunter who baited, shot, skinned and beheaded a beloved, majestic lion known as “Cecil” during a Zimbabwe safari is an American dentist from Minnesota, according to a local conservation group.
The 13-year-old lion wore a GPS tracking collar and was protected from hunts while living in the Hwange National Park in the Gwayi Conservancy. But Walter Palmer allegedly paid a guide an estimated $55,000 earlier this month to help lure the beast onto private land, where he shot it with a bow and arrow.
The group then stalked the animal before killing it 40 hours later with a rifle, according to the Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force, which first reported the Eden Prairie, Minn., dentist’s identity.
