Lawmakers in South Carolina voted to remove the Confederate flag from statehouse grounds, 94-20, sending the measure to Gov. Nikki Haley to sign into law.
Haley’s already indicated she will approve the measure, posting on Facebook shortly after its passage: “Today, as the Senate did before them, the House of Representatives has served the State of South Carolina and her people with great dignity. I’m grateful for their service and their compassion. It is a new day in South Carolina, a day we can all be proud of, a day that truly brings us all together as we continue to heal, as one people and one state.”
The debate in the House lasted for more than 13 hours, reaching emotional pitches at times. Once Haley signs the bill, the flag will be taken down, the Hill reported.
Not all were happy with the decision. Haley’s Facebook page recorded several disgruntled individuals.
Jim Madsen, for instance, wrote: “Cowardice in the South Carolina Governors office and thy name is Nikki Haley.”
And Jessica Hodge Summerlin added: “Sad day in South Carolina because of you Nikki Haley. … Very disrespectful.”
And one more, Patsy Turner Welborn: “Nikki Haley … you have let a lot of the people in South Carolina down. We voted for you because we felt you would represent our State proudly. The flag did not kill anyone. It is part of the South’s heritage.”
