Attorney General Loretta Lynch announced Thursday the Justice Department would be ensuring all “gay married” couples around the nation get their new federal entitlements, including Social Security.
She made the announcement in context of discussing the Supreme Court’s Obergefell v. Hodges ruling that bars states from prohibiting “gay marriage.”
The Hill reported Lynch ordered her staff to work with the pertinent federal agencies to ensure they’re in compliance with the ruling, and are providing “gay” couples the proper benefits.
“Thanks to their leadership and the quick work of the Social Security Administration and the Department of Veterans Affairs, today I am proud to announce that the critical programs for veterans and elderly and disabled Americans, which previously could not give effect to the marriages of couples living in states that did not recognize those marriages, will now provide federal recognition for all marriages nationwide,” she said, the Hill reported.
Lynch added: “The agencies are currently working towards providing guidance to implement this change in law.”
