Columnist Walter Williams is dead wrong about the welfare state, but the tragedy is his myopia.
Given the choice, most Republicans would look away from the homeless in disgust and accept every lie unquestioningly about what caused their situation. To refer to legally legislated taxation as "theft" is the deepest immoral misrepresentation of all. Another real immorality here is the fact that the tax burden is borne by people like Mr. Williams while people with millions more skate on paying their fair share. But that does not excuse his lie.
What is most deeply saddening about all this is the reality that there are huge and growing unmet needs out there now as a consequence of immoral Republican budget cuts. Add the institutional scams and thefts and one can see that it is the selfishness underlying Mr. Williams' position that is the real cancer on all our souls.

Put in a similar situation, would you steal a little to feed your starving child when no one would share with you voluntarily? I think Jesus would forgive that.
