(CNN)Think sexting is just for carefree (or careless) teens? Think again.
Researchers at Drexel University's Women's Health Psychology Lab conducted an online survey to explore the potential benefits of sharing sexually explicit messages or images through electronic means, cell phones in particular.
Preliminary findings suggest some correlation between sexting and relationship satisfaction, the researchers said.

Among 870 respondents surveyed online who identified as adults in the United States between the ages of 18 and 82, 88% reported having sexted at least once. A slightly lower number of respondents, 82%, reported sexting in the past year, according to an abstract published on the American Psychological Association's website.
