(SYDNEY MORNING HERALD) — BEIJING: A massive explosion has erupted in the major Chinese port city of Tianjin, sending a dramatic fireball into the night sky.
Chinese reports indicate the explosion, which occurred about 11.30pm local time on Wednesday, may have been caused by highly flammable cargo held at the city's container port.

State broadcaster China Central Television reported the blast had erupted in a shipment of explosives and that an unknown number of people had been injured, the South China Morning Post said on its website.
There has been no confirmation on the number of casualties, though early reports suggest that scores, if not hundreds of injured have been taken to nearby hospitals.
