A Savannah State University student who was shot near the campus student union died early Friday.

Christopher Starks was a junior at the college. He was shot Thursday by an unknown assailant and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

He died a few hours later, Fox News reported.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation officials have joined with the Savannah State University police department to find the shooter. They haven’t yet identified a suspect or motive. CNN, citing Loretta Heyward, a spokeswoman for the university, said Starks had engaged in an altercation with somebody at the student union before he was shot.

The campus went into lockdown late Thursday evening, and grief counselors were dispatched to students and staff. Classes resumed at 10 a.m. Friday.

Fox News reported the university is historically black with an estimated student enrollment of about 5,000.
