(WALL STREET JOURNAL) — Donald Trump’s commanding lead in GOP presidential primary polls continues, with the New York developer carrying twice as much support among South Carolina Republicans as any other candidate. Monmouth University’s survey found Mr. Trump with 30% support from Palmetto State Republicans likely to vote in next February’s primary.
In second place was retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson with 15%, followed by Jeb Bush (9%), Sen. Marco Rubio and Carly Fiorina (6% each), Sen. Ted Cruz (5%) and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and Sen. Lindsey Graham (both 4%).
Monmouth’s survey is the third public poll in the past month that shows Mr. Trump with 30% or more support in South Carolina, but it comes with a significant caveat. Polling in states that come after Iowa and New Hampshire are heavily dependent on the results of the first two states (where, to be clear, Mr. Trump is also leading).
