(CBS News) A US airstrike has killed the Islamic State’s ‘second in command’, according to the White House.
Fadhil Ahmad al-Hayali was killed in a strike near the Iraqi city of Mosul on Tuesday, according to National Security Council spokesman Ned Price.
Hayali was said to be a ‘senior deputy’ of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
He had reportedly been involved in the offensive that led ISIS to capture Mosul last summer and was allegedly involved in moving large numbers of weapons and supplies and people between the organization’s strongholds in Iraq and Syria.
