Blood feud: Blumenthal slammed Obama's chief strategist

President Obama and David Axelrod

In an email to Hillary Clinton, her longtime adviser and confidant Sidney Blumenthal blasted President Obama’s chief strategist, David Axelrod, as “out of his lane” for commenting on foreign policy.

“Axelrod has enough to do fixing the domestic messes he’s made,” Blumenthal scathingly wrote.

The Clinton loyalist had taken issue with statements Axelrod made during a Sunday, March 14, 2010, interview in which he criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s plans to build 1,600 homes in eastern Jerusalem as an “affront” to the so-called peace process.

Axlerod further claimed the Jewish construction, which was announced at about the same time Vice President Joe Biden was set to visit Israel, was “very destructive.”

“This was an affront, it was an insult but most importantly it undermined this very fragile effort to bring peace to that region,” Axlerod said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “For this announcement to come at that time was very destructive.”

Three days later, Blumenthal wrote to Clinton: “Here’s one small but frank thing: Axelrod should not be a foreign policy spokesman on any issue or area. He has badly exacerbated this one.

“Many people in the press feel he’s out of his lane and resent being lectured by him on foreign policy.”

The emails were among the 7,000 released by the State Department Monday night. The latest release included about 150 that have been censored because they contain information now designated as classified.

Blumenthal recommended: “I’d make Steinberg tell Donilon they need to rein in Axelrod. Axelrod has enough to do fixing the domestic messes he’s made. Let it come from Steinberg. He’s unhappy anyway.”

Blumenthal was referring to National Security Adviser Tom Donilon and James Steinberg, deputy secretary of state under Clinton.

Axelrod was Obama’s senior adviser until he left that position in 2011 to serve as senior strategist for Obama’s successful 2012 re-election campaign.
