(Florida Times-Union) While still on recall standby, Navy divers with Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit 6 Detachment Kings Bay have pretty much wrapped up their participation in the salvage recovery of a Confederate Navy ship.
CSS Georgia, a floating battery previously part of the Confederate Navy, was salvaged from the bottom of the Savannah River. Removal of artifacts, ordnance and pieces of the vessel were undertaken as part of the Savannah Harbor Expansion Project.
Senior Chief EOD Technician Richard Bledsoe said his divers are on standby for the mechanical excavation of the site, which involves a crane bringing up river bottom that is then sifted. Should a cannon ball be found, the unit would respond.
