Was it an act of God or just weird science? Either way, a mysterious cloud phenomenon over Costa Rica on Tuesday left witnesses in awe.

Social media lit up Sept. 15 with pictures and video of iridescent clouds users likened to something out of the Bible. UFO theories were also discussed.

“It was breathtaking. It’s like a sign of God,” said Escazu resident Jessie Montealegre, ABC News reported.

“We were just so amazed. We had no idea what it was and we’d never seen anything like it,” resident Ariel Joseph Petit told ABC.

Other witnesses said the clouds looked like something one would expect from the “end of times,” the network reported.

Eladio Solano, a meteorologist with Costa Rica’s National Meteorological Institute, had a much simpler explanation: a rare phenomenon called cloud iridescence.

Solano told Costa Rica’s Teletica News the strange lights are caused by water droplets and ice crystals refracted by the sun’s light, ABC reported.
