A girl, 10, born in China testified before a Massachusetts State House committee to ask them to support an amendment to the Constitution to allow her to run for the presidency.
The Constitution only allows natural-born citizens to seek the high executive office.
But Alena Mulhern said that’s not fair.
She asked committee members to think of “all the great candidates” who are prevented from holding the White House post because of “a law that came into existence more than 200 years ago,” she said, Fox News reported.
WBZ, the local CBS affiliate, reported she said everybody ought to have a chance to seek the presidency.
“I am an American as much as you are and everyone else,” said Mulhern, who was adopted by an American family when she was 10 months old. “And I don’t really remember China that much. All I know is America.”
Mulhern is specifically asking lawmakers to pass a resolution that asks Congress to consider the constitutional change.
The U.S. Constitution’s Article Two, Section One, Clause Five clearly states: “No person except a natural born citizen, or a citizen of the United States, at the time of the adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the office of president; neither shall any person be eligible to that office who shall not have attained to the age of 35 years and been 14 years a resident within the United States.”
