(CHICAGO TRIBUNE) Education Secretary Arne Duncan will step down in December, a White House official said Friday.
Duncan is the former Chicago Public Schools chief. He has served as U.S. education secretary since President Barack Obama took office in 2009.
Obama is to discuss the news at a press conference at 2:30 p.m. Chicago time Friday, the White House official said.

John B. King Jr., who is deputy secretary of education, is to replace Duncan, although The Associated Press said King will service as acting secretary of the department until the Obama's term ends in 2017.
