North Carolina Rep. Renee Ellmers allegedly used two words to describe allegations she and House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy are in an ongoing affair: "Bats--t crazy."
Two Republicans speaking on condition of anonymity with the Associated Press on Friday said Ellmers made the remark during a closed-door meeting.

Allegations of an affair between Ellmers and the California Republican surfaced shortly after he abruptly backed out of contention to replace Ohio Rep. John Boehner as speaker of the House.
Rep. Walter Jones, R-N.C., asked candidates to drop out if they had any skeletons in the closet moments before.

Ellmers also thanked her fellow Republican lawmakers for their continued support on Friday, even after having received "nasty emails" about the alleged extramarital affair, Politico reported.

A Wikipedia edit to McCarthy's page on Thursday, seemingly traced back to the Department of Homeland security, also asserted an affair between the two Republicans.
"As someone who has been targeted by completely false accusations and innuendo, I have been moved by the outpouring of support and prayers from my colleagues, constituents and friends. Now I will be praying for those who find it acceptable to bear false witness," Ellmers said in a statement released Friday.
McCarthy’s spokesman declined comment, AP reported.
Boehner's original plan to exit his role as House speaker on Oct. 29 has been postponed while Republicans attempt to find a nominee who can secure 125 votes during a secret ballot and then 218 votes from the full House soon afterward.
