(New York Post) — Hundreds of Chinese mom-and-pop nail-salon operators gathered behind a police barricade at The New York Times Company headquarters in Midtown last week chanting “Correct your mistakes!” and “We need answers!” A typical sign at the protest: “Your lies kill our shops!”
It was the third major nail-salon demonstration outside the paper’s headquarters in just five weeks — and more are planned.
What are these first-generation Chinese immigrants so angry about? In May, the Times published a two-part front-page series claiming that New York’s booming nail-salon industry is a hotbed of “rampant exploitation.” It alleged that skilled manicurists are paid as little as $10 per day to sculpt and polish the fingers and toes of well-heeled New Yorkers.
