'Active-shooter' training underway in U.S. mosques

CAIR's been sponsoring active shooting training at mosques in Florida.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations, or CAIR – the group that's been labeled a terrorist outfit by the United Arab Emirates – has been conducting live fire training inside some of its mosques with the intent of helping worshipers defend themselves in case of attack.

Nezar Hemze, a member of the Islamic Society of Sarasota-Bradenton, has visited several Muslim mosques in Florida to offer and provide the active shooting training, all at the courtesy of CAIR.

"People are just not prepared," he said, to local 10 News.

His training focuses on developing scenarios for each mosque to deal with, and then showing the proper self-defense techniques, including those involving guns.

"We need to make sure that the communities are trained and have a plan to deal with active shooters," he said. "Everyone in this country has to wake up. I think the entire country needs to get out of the victim mentality [because] it's happening everywhere."

Hamze's list of self-defense moves: Run, hide and then, if necessary, fight, he told local 10 News.

"You need to be thinking about these things," Hamze said. "If you choose to fight, you need to realize you are probably sacrificing your life."

Hamze said he provides the training for anyone, but also already visited and taught at synagogues, a church and mosques.

He is also helping the mosques apply for grants from the Department of Homeland Security to "beef up their own security."
