In afternoon trade, the S&P 500 rose more than 1 percent in an attempt to join the Nasdaq composite in positive territory for the year so far, while the Dow Jones industrial average remained more than 1 percent lower year-to-date.
The Dow held more than 150 points higher in afternoon trade, with Chevron and Exxon Mobil among the top contributors to gains. 3M was also among the top advancers.
