The 91-year-old ex-White House chief told his Maranatha Baptist Church Sunday school class his grandson felt ill on Saturday and went to take a nap at the family home in Peachtree City, Georgia. He never awoke from his nap, Carter said, and his mother discovered his body, the Hill reported.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution said parishioners praised the elder Carter for continuing to teach his Bible study class, despite the sad news of his grandson.

"That's the kind of Christian he is," one church member said to the newspaper. "Everything that happens in life, good or bad, he uses as a teaching experience."
