(POLITICO) Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said 2016 will be a challenging year for Republicans as they try to keep control of the Senate and that the GOP needs a nominee who can help Senate candidates win in moderate swing states.
He refused to comment on whether specific candidates such as Sen. Ted Cruz, his chief antagonist in the Senate, or Donald Trump would hurt the party's cause in states like Florida, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania.
"It would be extremely helpful...to carry purple states," McConnell said at a POLITICO Playbook breakfast. "It would make it easier for us to have a majority in the next Congress. ... All of which can draw your own conclusions about which candidates are most likely to carry purple states."
