The certifiable insanity of political correctness has long dominated the big colleges and universities in America.

The difference in the 21st century is that this madness has pervaded every nook and cranny of the academy.

Take the small campus of Lebanon Valley College in Pennsylvania, please. Students there are demanding that administrators rename a building called “Lynch Memorial Hall” because of the racial overtones of the word “lynch,” which recalls the public murders of black men in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Never mind that Lynch Memorial Hall is named after Clyde A. Lynch, president of the college from 1932 until his death in 1950.

The demand was included on a list students presented to the school last month. Other demands include a more diverse curriculum, more sensitivity training for staff and regular surveys of the racial climate on campus.

School spokesman Marty Parkes said that President Lewis Thayne is considering all of the demands. Calling Lynch a “very important figure” in the history of the college, Parkes said officials want to avoid “doing anything that would denigrate his memory or his legacy here.”

This craziness brings to mind a few other ideas for me:

  • Should the entire country rise up and demand the immediate resignation of Attorney General Loretta Lynch? Or should we just demand that no buildings are named after her? Or should we demand this black woman change her name? For the record, I’m OK with any of those options.
  • The students cite lynchings of blacks during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Do they know who was responsible for those lynchings? It was the Ku Klux Klan, the military wing of the Democratic Party. How many of them vote Democrat? Why does the Democratic Party always get a pass on this? Do they know Loretta Lynch is a Democrat in good standing? Do they know what party Clyde Lynch belonged to? Was he a Democrat or a Republican? If he was a Republican, he would have been a target of the Klan, which systematically murdered Republicans – black or white.
  • If the students of this Christian school 90 miles from Philadelphia are that obsessed about racial matters, perhaps they should consider the latest enrollment statistics at Lebanon Valley. It seems 83.6 percent of students are white, only 5.2 percent Hispanic and only 3.1 percent black.
  • With enrollment stats like that, it makes you wonder who is having micro-aggression panic attacks at the college? Are these occurring among the 3.1 percent black student base? Or are the micro-aggression attacks taking place when prospective black students visit the campus and see that awful name on the Lynch Memorial Hall and decide instantly to go somewhere else, anywhere else, for their schooling?

Seriously, when I first heard about this “micro-aggression” thing, I thought it was a joke. As a former lefty myself, it seems the “neo-progressives” of the 21st century just have too much time on their hands to imagine grievances.

Are these folks aware of the incredible human rights abuses taking place around the world this very day? Beheadings, cannibalism, slavery, human trafficking, female genital mutilation, genocide, genuine misogyny on a systematic scale.

And they have time to mount an attack on a building named after a man who selflessly devoted his life to building a college and, as fate would have it, was called “Lynch”?

It’s too absurd to even laugh it off.

But this is truly the face of the bankrupt ideology known as “progressivism.”

Thankfully, it’s on the retreat in this presidential election as at least three of the major Republican candidates have fearlessly and successfully, it seems, launched a major counter-offensive against it.
