(CNBC) — U.S stocks closed mixed Monday, stabilizing after their worst week since 2011, as declines in commodity prices weighed.
The Dow Jones industrial average briefly added 100 points in choppy trade as the close approached. Earlier, the index gave up opening gains of more than 100 points to temporarily fall more than 100 points in afternoon trade with Caterpillar and Chevron contributing the most to losses.
The S&P 500 and Nasdaq composite also tried to hold higher as the close approached.
