(IJ REVIEW) – In the affluent Dallas suburb of Frisco, Texas, parents of preschoolers who will enroll in kindergarten in the fall attended a "readiness meeting." During the event, the speaker brought up the issue of suicide – which shocked some parents.
Parent Kelly Lawson told CBSDFW.com: "It made the room completely dead silent ... the term suicide outcry, and the speaker had said that they're seeing a rise in the number of suicide outcries in kindergarteners."
Though there's no hard data on "suicide outcries" available, actual suicides among young children are extremely rare. The World Health Organization estimates that in 2012, there were only about three suicides out of every one million American children between the ages of five and fourteen years old.
