Donald Trump, in the final stretch before the Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire primary, is ramping up attacks on fellow Republican presidential hopeful Ted Cruz, coming out with a new ad that slams the fiery Texan as a “total hypocrite” whose walk hardly matches his talk.
The television spots, due to air in the coming days in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina, show Cruz in a “confused state, unable to answer simple policy questions, as he contemplates his position, advice from his pollsters, donors and the special interests who control him,” Trump’s campaign described, in a press release.
The spot is aimed at highlighting the differences between Cruz and Trump on illegal immigration, a focal point of the billionaire businessman’s campaign – and a key reason why he’s remained the front-runner in state and national polls.
“Ted Cruz is a total hypocrite,” Trump said, on the campaign release, “and, until recently, a Canadian citizen who may not even have a legal right to run for president. He didn’t disclose loans, pretending he’s Robin Hood, when he’s just another all talk, no action politician. Had I not brought up the subject of illegal immigration, an issue which Tex Cruz is very weak on, nobody would even be talking about it.”
Trump then repeated a mantra that’s been central to his campaign: “I will build a great wall and Mexico will pay for it,” he said.
The ad is part of Trump’s weekly $2 million allotment for campaign spots. It’s available online here.
