The American psyche is not a pretty place right now, says award-winning journalist David Kupelian.
The stats he cites are stunning: More than 130 million Americans dependent on mind-altering substances just to get through life, 1 in 4 middle-aged women taking antidepressants, 1 in ten girls engaged in "cutting," and 110 million Americans with sexually transmitted diseases.
"If you look at all the numbers, you say, 'My God, it looks like all the grownups are addicted,'" Kupelian said during a live, in-studio interview this week on theDove TV. "They have so much conflict and pain that they are trying to deaden that pain any way they know."

So what's at the core of Americans' skyrocketing personal disintegration – including the widely reported upsurge in white middle class suicide and heroin and opioid addiction? Kupelian, the bestselling author of several influential books including the recently released blockbuster, "The Snapping of the American Mind: Healing a Nation Broken by a Lawless Government and Godless Culture," blames the political and cultural left. He summed up his thesis to host Perry Atkinson this way:

"You cannot teach, as the left does, the next generation that there is no God, that there are no values, there's no right or wrong, that you can have sex with anything that moves, there's no morality, that America is a horrible country, and on and on – you can't do that to people without incurring these consequences," he said.

According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, roughly 42,000 Americans die by suicide each year. That makes the annual suicide rate nearly 13 per 100,000 individuals. The AFSP also estimates that for every successful suicide, there are 25 suicide attempts.
Kupelian argued on the popular Christian TV show that much of the reported upsurge in depression, addiction, immorality, divorce, fatherlessness, mental illness and suicide in Obama-era America is "specifically tied to the practices of the left," which he says are "driving people over the edge." His "Snapping" book backs up the thesis with a great deal of scientific research and over 400 endnotes.
Reaching for an even deeper level of reality, Kupelian told theDove's Atkinson that terms like "left" and "right" do not adequately capture the current political-cultural paradigm in America, because those terms tend to convey moral equivalence. It is really, he said, more a case of "up" and "down" – that the so-called "left" wants to take traditional Judeo-Christian America down.
Differentiating the far left from well-meaning but naïve "liberals," Kupelian said, "I'm talking about the hardcore left like Barack Obama, people of his ilk … these are revolutionaries who, at core, are at war with the God of the Bible and His laws."
In fact, he then went on to argue that the far left literally cannot operate without violating the Ten Commandments. For example, quoting Winston Churchill who described socialism as "the gospel of envy," he said socialism is built on literally institutionalizing envy, which violates the command, "Thou shalt not covet." Likewise, he said, the left fights hard for the right to abortion, which violates God's command, "Thou shalt not murder." The left is also responsible for the sexual revolution, which has destroyed untold millions of individuals and families, all by violating the command, "Thou shalt not commit adultery."

"You can go all the way through it and you say, 'Wow, this whole worldview that has so many people fawning after Bernie Sanders – this is actually a really dark, rebellious worldview that rejects God and His commandments!'" Kupelian stated.
Lamenting that too many young people are inculcated in this worldview in college, which he termed a "petri dish" of leftist culture, Kupelian said the results are often devastating for the students.
"So many people end up being corrupted and brainwashed into hating their country" in college, he said.
And regarding the all-pervasive campus "hook-up culture": "I show in 'The Snapping of the American Mind' … that mental illness, depression, suicide are through the roof on the college campuses – because these things have consequences."

Kupelian wrote more about the culture war in his two previous books, "The Marketing of Evil" and its sequel, "How Evil Works."
Why has the Christian church not fought back, Atkinson asked, against the anti-Christian, anti-American onslaught of the transformative left? Christians are only human, Kupelian responded, and unfortunately too much of the Christian church has likewise been subverted and transformed just like the rest of America.
Kupelian said he was not referring merely to obvious abuses like the Catholic Church's well-publicized child molestation scandal or the ordination of homosexual clergy in some Protestant denominations. But rather, in so many ways, Christians have allowed the leftist worldview to creep into their churches and influence their thought and conduct.

"Even in the evangelical church, in the Protestant world, there is so much shallowness and cowardice that goes on in there," he said.
But despite the fact that the left has subverted most of America's major institutions, Kupelian remains hopeful about the future of the country.
"Just the fact that people are so appalled by what they see going on, that's a sign of something good in them!" he said. "There are too many good people, too many people that remember what America was" to give up the fight.
Kupelian believes clear-minded, God-centered individuals can turn the country around, but they will not do it through politics alone.

"We have very much a gutter culture, and that really affects people, especially young people," he said. "That is the air they breathe, and we have fallen very far away from a godly culture."
Kupelian noted that he and his wife homeschooled their children and most of the books, TV shows, and movies they used to instruct their kids were from the 1950s and early '60s. That is because many of the entertainment products of that era – he rattled off names like "Davy Crockett," "Ben-Hur," "The Ten Commandments," "The Chronicles of Narnia" – were rooted in core American, Judeo-Christian values.
Getting back to such a wholesome culture will help everyone, he said, but especially those children who don't have a stable family.
"Even if you have a rough home life… if you have a culture that is beautiful and strong and at least makes an effort to hold to really core, proven values, there's a safety net there," he asserted. "I'm not talking about a welfare safety net, but a spiritual safety net. The coach at school, the teacher, the pastor – somebody is there to help you."
Turning the culture around may be hard, but it must be done, said Kupelian. He believes it can be done because the country has not yet passed a point of no return.
"I don't believe at all that it's hopeless or too late," he said.
