Law enforcement and members of the community respond to a shooting at Panera's in Maryland that left a deputy dead.
Two sheriff's deputies were shot and killed by a gunman during a dramatic lunchtime incident that started at a Panera restaurant in Abingdon, Maryland, said Harford County Sheriff Jeffrey Gahler.
"This is a tragic day for the Harford County Sheriff's Office," Gahler said, during a televised news conference shortly after the shopping center shootings.

He said the motive wasn't known, but it appeared the police were targeted because they were members of the law-enforcement community.

Fox News reported police received a call to the restaurant by someone complaining of a problem. The deputy sat alongside the suspect, started talking, and then the man shot him in the head. The deputy died later at a nearby hospital.
The suspected gunman was killed by police, but not until after he shot a second deputy outside the restaurant during an exchange of gunfire, the Associated Press reported. The deputies' names haven't been released.

The suspect, 67-year-old David Brian Evans, had warrants out for his arrest in both Harford County and Orange County, Florida, including one for an accusation of assaulting an officer.
The killed officers had served on the force for 30 years and for 16 years, according to the Associated Press.
"They were two outstanding deputies who served the citizens of this community faithfully," said Gahler.
He also said "the restaurant was very full," but "thankfully, no one else was injured."
