(CNBC) — U.S. stocks closed higher Tuesday, helped by gains in consumer discretionary and financials, as well as positive developments in China.
The Dow transports closed up more than 2 percent.
Consumer discretionary gained more than 2 percent to lead the S&P 500 higher, while the SPDR S&P Retail ETF (XRT) briefly gained 4 percent. Core retail sales topped expectations Friday with a 0.6 percent rise last month after an unrevised 0.3 percent decline in December.
