(CNBC) U.S. stocks traded in a range Thursday, holding much of the week’s gains ahead of Friday’s jobs data.
The Dow transports traded nearly 1 percent higher and in positive territory for 2016. The Russell 2000 also traded higher, up about 0.6 percent in afternoon trade.
The S&P 500 attempted gains in afternoon trade as energy traded more than half a percent higher to lead advancers. Health care was the greatest decliner.
The Dow Jones industrial average also tried to hold higher, with Caterpillar contributing the most to gains and McDonald’s the greatest decliner.
