(NEW YORK DAILY NEWS) A Las Vegas police dog was killed by friendly fire during a foot-chase shootout between cops and a man accused of killing two of his neighbors.

K-9 officer Nicky was fatally shot Thursday, just two months after he was stabbed on duty, police said. A quartet of Metropolitan Police officers fired 23 bullets at suspected murderer James Craig Simpson during the running gun battle.

“Nicky died doing what we trained him to do and quite frankly, what he loved to do — and that is going after the bad guy,” Metropolitan Police Department Undersheriff Kevin McMahill said Monday.
