CNN has been coming on strong against FOX in the ratings' war.
In the latest on ratings' wars, it seems Prince fans mourning the pop star's death, especially those in the key 25-to-54-year-old demographic, turned their sets for investigative developments to CNN, not Fox, according to Mediaite's tracking.
Of especial note was the fact Don Lemon and his "CNN Tonight" show won over 268,000 viewers for that Friday's coverage, compared to Fox megastar Megyn Kelly's 267,000 – a small but significant win for the Turner Broadcasting System outlet that's seen substantial gain in ratings in recent months.

As TV Newser reported: "CNN continued to be a prime time powerhouse in April, particularly in the adults 25-54 demographic. From prime time debates and town halls to breaking news, talkers, original series and specials, the network seemed to have the ingredients necessary to cook up strong prime time ratings in April. CNN ranked No. 1 in cable news with adults 25-54 ... This is the 4th time in the past eight months that CNN has won the demo in prime time."

As Mediate reported, CNN as a whole – not just in the Lemon-Kelly matchup – dominated in much of the Prince death coverage.

Jake Tapper's late afternoon "The Lead" won 359,000 viewers, versus Fox News host Neil Cavuto's 214,000; Wolf Blitzer's "Situation Room" won 266,000 viewers compared to Fox's "The Five" 249,000; Blitzer's second hour won 263,000 versus Fox's Bret Baier's 257,000; and Erin Burnett on CNN received 260,000 viewers compared to Fox's Greta Van Susteren's 203,000, Breitbart reported.
And those numbers have been going on for a while.
"The story is even more interesting if we move outside of the cable news bubble," TV Newser reported. "In April, CNN experienced the strongest year-over-year growth of any network (cable or broadcast) in both total viewers and adults 25-54 during prime time [with the additional of] 125 percent in total viewers (1.14 million versus 507,000) and [the addition of] 105 percent in the news demo (381,000 versus 186,000) from April 2015."
TV Newser also reported "of particular note, CNN has narrowed the gap with Fox News ... to its smallest level in over seven year," reducing Fox's lead by nine percent since October 2008.
Anecdotal evidence suggests a growing number of Fox viewers have been angered at the cable outlet's perceived move to the left the last couple years, as well as its frequent criticisms of Republican presidential primary front-runner Donald Trump. Kelly, for example, came under public fire for her questioning of Trump during an August debate on Fox about his past treatment of women, and for the ensuing public spat that waged between her and the billionaire businessman for months.
