Trent Harmon, the winner of the final “American Idol” contest, took a brief time-out from accepting his nationally televised stage kudos to whisper in the ear of his fellow contender – and his fellow Mississippian – La’Porsha Renae, who finished second: God has big plans for you, too.
Seconds after his name was called as winner, Harmon collapsed on stage and then quickly stood, and hugged his competitor, telling her, “It’s God’s will,” over and over.
Renae told USA Today Harmon said: “Trent just whispered in my ear, ‘You know, this is what God wants. God has something really special for you. You won with me, too, baby.'”
And at the wrap of the show, record executive Scott Borchetta announced not only a deal with Harmon, but also with Renae.
“I love them both,” he said, the news outlet reported. “They’re both great.”
On stage, speaking to the audience, Harmon also said: “I knew that I had a God-given ability but I didn’t want to take it for granted. I wanted to work so, so hard, and [Renae] pushed me to do it.”
Harmon later took to Twitter to blast out his thanks to God.
On his account, just hours after winning the talent competition, he posted this: “Thank you, LORD.” Alongside, was a big red heart, and beneath, a video in which he said: “I love ya’ll so much. I worked hard but ya’ll did this. All I did was show up and sing and I appreciate you so much and I love you. Bye.”
