His name is Dwight Watkins, and he wants you to be murdered because you're in the NRA.
Typical of liberal "street" authors, Watkins is one of those horrible people who led a horrifying life before finding a way to make a living through some other means than crime. Elevated to the status of author by his fellow progressives and their white guilt, Watkins is a spire of human garbage, an animated mannequin of sticky refuse that walks and writes and makes noises from its mouth hole. But Watkins is also a liberal, first and foremost, and because he is a liberal, he views technology as the witch doctor views a brightly colored flower. Technology, to Watkins, must either be magically good or magically evil – and so, he believes, are the people who wield it.
Watkins, by his own admission, decided to "leave the streets" of East Baltimore because all his friends were murdered by his fellow drug dealers. Bret McCabe, writing for Johns Hopkins magazine, makes several excuses for Watkins. He "wanted to work with kids" and "thought about becoming a history professor," but "school didn't sit right with him." Watkins enrolled at Loyola, but "his mind was elsewhere." Watkins' own stepbrother was murdered the previous year, but according to McCabe, Watkins "felt out of place at the predominantly white university," so he dropped out "to sell cocaine and heroin back in East Baltimore."

Watkins recently wrote a piece for Salon in which he called for the "gutless cowards" in the NRA to "take a bullet" if they want to own guns. The staggering hypocrisy of this man lecturing gun owners – a man who has sold some of the worst illegal drugs imaginable – would be astonishing if it weren't so typical of liberal gall. Liberals take one of two attitudes toward technology, sometimes simultaneously. On the one hand, they think it will solve problems by magic, simply because they think it should. "Smart gun" technology that doesn't work properly should nonetheless be forced down our throats by law, according to the liberals, because they think this talisman, this magical phrase – "smart gun" – will make everything better. (Just what cops and gun-owning civilians will do when this flawed technology causes their guns to fail, the libs can't say.) We should make animal trials and testing illegal, say the liberals, because magical "computer simulations" can be used instead. (Just where the data for those simulations will come, the libs can't say.) We should force electric cars on the American public because this magical technology is "clean" and therefore better. (Just what we'll do about the fact that electric car technology pollutes MORE than fossil fuels, the libs can't say.) We should invest millions if not billions of taxpayer dollars in "green" technologies to meet "climate change" standards that can never be strict enough. (Just why these "green companies" keep failing, the libs can't say.)
On the other hand, liberals have never understood that technology, in and of itself, is amoral. Guns have no volition. A gun is a tool whose purpose is to launch projectiles in a straight direction. Whether those projectiles strike home invaders and rapists, or the clerk behind the counter at a liquor store, is the choice of the operator. The average liberal believes that guns leap up off coffee tables and jump out of closets to murder children. Overwhelmingly, liberals have no understanding of firearms. They have not handled guns; they have not owned guns; they have not fired guns. Their fear is born of a combination of their ignorance and their projection. They know nothing about this technology, so it becomes dark sorcery and they fear it. They have weakness and hatred in their hearts, so they project that weakness and hatred onto others – and they fear those others. This is why the average liberal hates the NRA and its members: He wants to murder and is too emotionally and mentally weak to own a gun. He believes, wrongly, that NRA members share his weakness.
In this projection, of course, Dwight Watkins is straying from the liberal narrative just a little bit. He is blaming people first and technology second in his desire to shoot NRA members. It's just that Watkins is shifting his hate from Watkins himself, and the people he grew up with, to people who commit far fewer crimes (and certainly fewer crimes with guns) than Watkins' own East Baltimore peers. The average gun owner, statistically, is more law-abiding than other citizens. In other words, a legal gun owner is far less likely than someone like Dwight Watkins to have committed a violent crime. I guarantee that Watkins is personally responsible for more deaths, either directly or indirectly, than any of the law-abiding gun owners he so hates. Watkins' hatred for guns themselves, as malevolent force, is therefore secondary to his projected self-loathing.
Watkins is typical of liberal Democrats, of progressives, of social justice whiners, for two reasons: First, he views technology with the wide eyed incredulity of a liberal, believing it to have life and volition of its own. Second, he projects his cowardice and his murderous hatred onto law-abiding gun owners, believing that all members of the National Rifle Association must share his desire to prey on and kill his fellow human beings. Dwight Watkins' attitude toward technology – in this case, firearms, the technology of self-defense – is the attitude of a caveman. The technology is black magic, and the men and women who wield it are dark sorcerers. They are, to Dwight Watkins' mind, inherently evil. He therefore believes he is justified in inflicting his clickbait Salon article on the world.

The inconvenient truth, in this case, is that it is not the NRA that murdered Dwight Watkins' friends and family. It is Watkins and his peers who bear that responsibility. In his desire to blame everyone but himself for his problems – up to and including murder – Mr. Watkins has constructed a fantasy in which law-abiding gun owners, and the technology of guns, bear the blame for the actions of drug-dealing street trash. For this reason above all others, Dwight Watkins is a gutless coward ... and it looks like he always will be.
