A century ago the "progressives" made two major moves against America. The first was the 16th Amendment, which has increasingly siphoned money from the several states to Washington to be squandered by Congress (a lot of it to buy votes).
The other move was the 17th Amendment (which most Americans are unfamiliar with). The 17th changed the structure of Congress, calling for the popular election of U.S. senators. Prior to the 17th, each state could, as the Founders intended, appoint two senators. These senators were appointed to represent states' governments in Congress. Since they were appointed, they didn't have to pander to voters, but could do what was right and good for their states.
With the ratification of the 17th Amendment, states' governments lost their voices in Congress, a giant step toward consolidation of centralized power the "progressives" or leftists or Marxists desire and are destroying or nation for.
