Biblical prophecies provide an invaluable guide toward understanding current and future world events. The return of the Jewish people to their ancestral homeland after 2,000 of exile, the aggressiveness of Muslims and the decline of Europe are just a few examples of prophecies being revealed today. Because some prophecies have already been fulfilled, many have faith that unfulfilled prophecies will also be fulfilled in the future.
What will be the fate of America according to biblical prophecies? In my newest book, "Biblical Women Who Changed the World," I explore the modern relevance of the prophecy Rebecca received during her pregnancy with her twin sons, Esau and Jacob. God's word to Rebecca was the following: "Two nations are in your womb, two regimes from your insides will be separated. the might shall pass from one regime to the other, and the elder should serve the younger" (Stone Edition). The shift in power from Esau to Jacob began with the establishment of the Jewish state of Israel in 1948.

How do we identify Esau today? Esau sold the birthright of the firstborn for a pot of lentils because he was hungry. In this act, Esau demonstrates that satisfying his physical needs and desires is more important than receiving the spiritual privileges and responsibilities of the firstborn. Esau is a murderer and an adulterer but pretends to be righteous before his father. Materialism and hypocrisy are the primary characteristics of people associated with Esau. According to Jewish wisdom, Esau is code for Europe, Russia, other Christian and secular countries. Yakov is code for Israel and the Jewish people.
The Bible also tells us that "Esau hates Jacob" (Genesis 27:41). The murder of more than one-third of the world's Jewry in the Holocaust in Europe in the 1940s was the culmination of thousands of years of frequent persecution, displacement and discrimination. European anti-Semitism is rising once again due to the dramatic increase in Muslim immigration and their high birth rate. "The day of the Lord is near for all nations. As you have done to Israel, it will be done to you. Your deeds will return upon your own head" (Obadiah 1:15). Europe is on the brink of physical and spiritual decline.
What about America? On one hand, America has a natural affinity toward Israel because the Founding Fathers envisioned America as a new Israel with a covenant modeled after that of the Jewish people. The United States has always had a different spiritual mission and identity than that of Europe, never engaging in anti-Semitism to the extent of Europe. However, as America has become increasingly secular and progressive, many Americans today do not feel an affinity towards Israel.
The greatest betrayal of Israel by the United States might be the recent Iran deal aggressively pursued by President Obama. Against the desperate cries of Israel, this deal assures Iran becomes a nuclear power and receives billions of dollars to pursue its evil agenda. In negotiating this deal, the U.S. failed to demand that Iran give up its call for the destruction of the state of Israel and support of international terrorism. President Obama caved in to most of Iran's demands and even made side deals hidden from Congress to achieve this agreement. Recently, Obama capitulated to Iran once again and released hundreds of millions of dollars in what resembled a ransom for Americans held by Iran.

The Palestinian and Israeli conflict is another important example of America's lessened commitment to Israel. Leaders from both political parties have often talked about America being a fair broker between a beautiful democratic country, Israel, and a corrupt terrorist entity called the PLO that oppresses its own people, encourages acts of terrorism and whose charter even calls for the destruction of the state of Israel. Yet, America keeps supporting the PLO, fully knowing how American taxpayer monies given to the PLO rewards people who commit terrorism and makes billionaires of Muslim leadership. Why America chooses not to attach financial consequences for Palestinian support of terrorism is a mystery. All American efforts for peace will always fail because they never address the real fundamental reason for the lack of peace. It is not Israeli settlements or anything Israel does. Rather, it is the PLO's resistance to the very existence of a Jewish State.
If the United States continues in its present direction, it must be considered a part of Esau. Like Europe, America will be weakened and suffer the fate of Esau. The Zohar, the principal esoteric commentary on the Bible, actually predicted the day of the attack on Sept. 11. "Three very tall towers will collapse on the 23rd day of Elul, and a fourth one will be struck, in a city, in a predominantly Christian country. The collapse of the buildings will be accompanied by a thunder-like sound and tremendous fire" (Zohar III, 212b). The fourth building was not described as being in the same locale as the first three. We did not know the year or the exact place, but Sept. 11 corresponds to the Hebrew month of Elul, the 23rd day in the year 2001. This event confirms that America was spiritually considered in Esau's camp.
There is another possible fate for the United States. The Bible tells us "Those who bless you [Israel and the Jewish people] will be blessed. Those who curse you will be cursed" (Genesis 27:29). If America is faithful to its own spiritual covenant with God, and supports Israel unequivocally, America will be blessed with prosperity and protection. The Bible is very clear. This year's 2016 presidential election offers Americans a clear choice for the direction of the country, particularly in regard to its relationship with Israel. May America have the moral clarity to support Israel for its own sake.
