I like thinking most of people get a good feeling out of a charitable deed. Then there is the heavenly reward component, karma, etc..
There are dark souls who travel another path. They need prayers.
A good deed offers the person on the receiving end something beyond the material. A glimpse or feeling of something better in another soul. For a moment, one sees beyond their current predicament. There is hope.

Mother Theresa, a saint, stated that she offered the dying knowledge that someone cares for them, loves them at the end of their life. Knowing someone loves you is important. The absence of love, good, creates a void that will be filled.
Donations, pledges, fundraisers: They have their place, but looking into the eyes of one you are helping is beyond a tax write-off. It's an action that enriches both parties spiritually.

In a time of social progressive Nirvana, something is lost, spirituality. Life is a continual struggle between two worlds. Spiritual versus material, good versus evil, darkness versus light: It is a struggle seemingly without end.
I view life, creation, the cosmos as a glass half full, not half empty, I hope for better. Try giving someone hope, one on one.
