Obama releases dozens more cocaine dealers

President Obama announced Thursday he will commute the sentences of another 102 offenders, mostly cocaine dealers.

A total of 774 offenders have had their sentences cut by Obama, “more than the previous 11 presidents combined,” boasted Neil Eggleston, counsel to the president, on the White House blog.

“The vast majority of today’s grants were for individuals serving unduly harsh sentences for drug-related crimes under outdated sentencing laws,” he claimed.

Such as Shawn Leo Barth of Bismarck, North Dakota, perhaps.

He had been caught on counts of “conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine; possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute methamphetamine; distribution of a controlled substance methamphetamine; possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance marijuana; possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime; felon in possession of a firearm/ammunition.”

“With a total of 590 commutations this year, President Obama has now commuted the sentences of more individuals in one year than in any other single year in our nation’s history,” Eggleston pointed out.

Eggleston said that while Obama will “continue to review cases on an individualized basis throughout the remainder of his term, these statistics make clear that the president and his administration have succeeded in efforts to reinvigorate the clemency process.”

“Beyond the statistics, though, are stories of individuals who have overcome the longest of odds to earn this second chance,” he said. “The individuals receiving commutation today are mothers and fathers, sons and daughters, and in some cases grandparents. Today, they and their loved ones share the joy of knowing that they will soon be reunited.”

Eggleston said commutations “can be a powerful tool to rectify specific cases, but the individualized nature of this relief highlights the need for bipartisan criminal justice reform legislation.”

“These include reforms that address the excessive mandatory minimum sentences that imprisoned many of the individuals receiving commutation today. Only the passage of legislation can achieve the broader reforms needed to ensure our federal sentencing system operates more fairly and effectively in the service of public safety.”

But David Horowitz recently wrote at the Conservative Review what while Obama “touts these criminals as low-level drug offenders, almost everyone in the federal system is a hardcore drug trafficker in which violent crime is a way of life.”

“Many of the sentences were originally plead down simply because it is always easier to nail a prosecution on drug charges, even when the individual was originally arrested for armed robbery or even murder,” he pointed out.

“A quick search shows that at least 16 of these individuals were convicted of firearms charges, including using a firearm in the furtherance of drug trafficking. This, at a time when Obama is trying to clamp down on law-abiding gun owners.”
