We knew the attacks were coming

By Gina Loudon

We knew this was coming.

The 11-year-old leaked audio of Donald Trump’s locker-room-style banter with Billy Bush isn’t easy to listen to, and we should be prepared for even more to come out between now and Election Day.

In last week’s column, I warned that the Democrats have turned to the page in the leftist playbook that tells them to dig up dirt and assassinate the character of their opponents because they must distract from the issues.

When elections are about the issues, Democrats lose.

We all know that if any of the other 16 candidates had won the primary, he or she would be going through something similar to what Donald Trump is dealing with now.

There is no excuse for what Mr. Trump said in that tape, but Donald Trump’s flaws have not hurt him in the past in the minds of American voters. We were told dozens of times during the primary that his campaign was over. They were wrong every time.

Times like these are when Donald Trump shines, and he now has a unique opportunity to turn this into a win.

Mr. Trump has a chance to connect even further with the American people on a personal level because of this controversy. Every American voter has said something in private that they regret.  If he gives a contrite apology and talks about his transformation on the campaign trail, he can turn these attacks into a big win.

I detailed how Mr. Trump can turn this into a win on Fox News on Sunday afternoon:

Going through a political campaign is a humbling experience, and Mr. Trump has changed as he has traveled across America as a candidate.

My husband spent years in politics, and I also ran for office. It changed us. Political campaigns are a unique spiritual experience. People close to Donald Trump, including pastor Robert Jeffress, have spoken about Mr. Trump’s spiritual transformation during this process.

I talked about that Sunday morning on “Fox and Friends”:

Donald Trump has the ability to turn this controversy into a big win. If Mr. Trump will apologize, then tell the story of his transformation on the campaign trail as he met tens of thousands of people across America, he can connect with voters on a personal level and win the election.
