(ABC ONLINE) At least 31 people have been killed and 72 injured by a powerful chain-reaction explosion in a fireworks market in Mexico, the Governor of the State of Mexico says.

The explosion ripped through San Pablito, the country’s best-known fireworks market, on the northern outskirts of the capital Mexico City, sending a huge plume of smoke billowing into the sky.

The state’s top prosecutor has raised the death toll to 31, most of whom died at the market, while at least 70 people had been injured, federal police said.
