Police are investigating a fire and blast at the Canberra offices of the Australian Christian Lobby following the explosion of a van filled with gas bottles that had been driven into the building late Wednesday night.
The van was destroyed and the two-story office building, named Eternity House, was badly damaged by fire
“Fortunately, none of our staff or the tenants in the building were there,” said Lyle Shelton, ACL managing director.
“The building was vacant. It was after hours, so none of our people were injured.”
The unidentified male driver of the van sustained injuries and is currently being treated at a local hospital. It is currently unclear if the incident was intentional or an accident, although the fact the driver drove through the parking lot first before hitting the building is suspicious.
The crash came only a day after a reportedly ISIS-inspired truck attack on the outdoor Berlin Christmas Market that left 12 dead and nearly 50 injured. In Beijing, police reported another 12 people killed when a truck plowed into a farmers market Wednesday. That driver is in custody.
The ADL has been embroiled in a number of issues that could account for the group being targeted. It is outspoken in opposition of homosexual marriage and has been a leading voice in an effort to convince Parliament to designate ISIS’ murder of Christians and other religious minorities “genocide.”

Shelton expressed both shock and certainty that the crash at ADL had been intentional.
“There is no doubt in my mind that ACL was the target,” he said.
“Obviously, we don’t know the motives of the person who drove this van, but we have received a number of death threats and threats of violence over the course of this year that we have reported to police.
“This is an attack on free speech in Australia, which I am deeply shocked about and never thought I would see in my lifetime.”
Shelton suspects it is ADL’s activism on same-sex marriage that is most likely the attacker’s motivation.
“I think something of this nature, that appears to be so deliberate, is an attack against the sort of things that we’ve been saying in the public square,” he told ABC radio.
“And obviously someone didn’t like that which we stand for, which we’ve advocated publicly.”
