During the shaky days of 1991, when the grievously wounded Soviet Union was about to fall, an American in Moscow asked American Ambassador Jack Matlock what was going to happen – Communism, anti-Communism, Gorbachev, Yeltsin, what? Ambassador Matlock replied, "I don't have a clue, but if you get back to me after it happens, I'll be happy to tell you why it was inevitable!"
Since Ambassador Matlock and I are from the same city in North Carolina, let me now try to redeem our Tar Heel powers of prognostication. Ask me what's going to happen with all the many tornadoes swirling around inside the wet paper bag of Washington, D.C., and I'll tell you exactly what's going to happen.
We have to start deep, dark and philosophical. We can live long lives and never get over the illusion that we all see and share the same America and the same world. Get rid of that absurd illusion and we can proceed. Let me give you a push toward understanding. Disney World in Orlando, Florida, includes a magnificent feature called Epcot (Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow) Center. About a dozen or more countries have pavilions in Epcot, in which you watch entertaining introductions to the country, taste the food, walk the Great Wall of China, visit a Norwegian ski slope and emerge knowing more about a foreign country than you presently know.
One of the features of Epcot is the American pavilion, which offers a one-hour dramatization of the history of America from the earliest European settlers to today. I was startled to see all of World War II covered in six seconds and without a mention of either Germany or Japan! The narrator solemnly intoned, "The Nazis rampaged through Europe and then bombs fell on Pearl Harbor," without indication there might be some connection between "Nazis" and Germany and without indicating which country it was that dropped those bombs upon Pearl Harbor.
After the performance I asked one of the young ushers why this educational adventure failed to tell us that the Nazis were German and the bombardiers over Pearl Harbor were Japanese. "Hey, Man," he replied, "We get a lot of visitors here from those countries!"
Get it? A Holocaust survivor would have to take a pill and lie down after a historical cover-up that gross. Somebody around 50 years old might see the performance and say, "Hmm, no mention of Germany or Japan. That's interesting." And that usher, who's maybe 18, doesn't even feel like he's hit a historical pothole. He doesn't want to make visitors to Epcot from Germany and Japan uncomfortable! In other words, depending on our birth dates, we are experiencing totally different worlds together.
I have dreadful news for the Democrats. "It's not working, fellows. You may think it is, because the media have found a nesting place in your large intestines and those who hate President Trump have such loud voices, but you'll see soon enough. You're assuming the mass of American voters has the same negative and fearful view of Russia that was so prominent and prevalent in the 1950s. You Democrats don't seem to have anything in your arsenal except the specter of Trump's coziness with the Russians. That's not enough. You're dropping a honeysuckle down the Grand Canyon and hoping for an echo."
Would the Democrats be excited if proof arrived that Trump had heretofore unknown ties to Norway? Or Guatemala? Or Nepal? Stoking fear of Russia will gain Democrats a few more votes, but very few. Particularly with the stock market delivering record high after record high, jobs opening up, illegal border crossings down 70 percent, MS-13 getting busted big-time, ISIS on the Mideast ropes and all the other great things going on. That's the Dems' biggest problem. The most deliberately blind media can't conceal the symptoms of Trump's success. There's just too much too good going on, and all of it unequivocally due to the works of President Donald Trump. Trump is simply too good to cover up. You can hide the fire for a little while, but what are you going to do with all that smoke?
So, here's what's going to happen. Trump will treat the Democrats and his other adversaries pretty much like a blowtorch treats cobwebs. Trump will blossom. His enemies will fade away.
For years the Republicans and conservatives tore their hair out screaming at the unfairness of it all. Look at the political sins and crimes of the liberals with never a mention of investigation or prosecution. Now it's the Democrats' and the liberals' turn to moan, "Where's the outrage?"
Instead of indictments and trials and jail, shocking leaks about White House chaos and things like President Trump helping his children lie about certain meetings in the White House – those outrages will be forgiven by being forgotten, and rather quickly.
Poor Trump. The left hates him. The media hate him. The open-border enthusiasts hate him. The pro-abortion people hate him. The academagogues hate him.
He's got nobody on his side except the people.
