What's 'Doomsday Plane' doing flying over U.S.?

Nov. 25, 2016: A top-secret aircraft known as the "doomsday plane" was spotted in the skies over the U.S., driving wild speculation about the purpose of the aircraft designed to counteract a nuclear attack.

It was spotted by thousands of Americans over a period of several days.

A spokesman for the Navy confirmed the craft was the E-6B Mercury, also known as the "Doomsday Plane."

The U.S. military owns 16 so-called "doomsday planes," a powerful aircraft that holds the capability to launch nuclear missiles. It was designed to serve as a flying command center in the event of a nuclear war.

The plane traveled across several states, changed directions numerous times and eventually landed in Oklahoma.

Users on Twitter speculated that the plane's flight could have been a show of strength to Russia or even a response to the election of then-President-elect Donald Trump.
