A pistol-packing Oklahoma pastor who stumbled on a wild high-speed police chase Friday apparently decided he wanted a piece of the action.
Pastor Craig Wright, of Faith Crossing Baptist Church, saw the two-hour police chase on TV and acted quickly. Suspect Brenton Hager was filmed driving a stolen truck, speeding into oncoming traffic and ripping through neighborhoods and farm lands.
Wright followed Hager, and blocked the truck with his own vehicle. Then Wright, who has a concealed carry license, stepped out of his car and asked Hager if he needed help.
When Hager tore off, Wright drew his handgun and fired shots at the suspect’s tires, hoping to disable the vehicle.
“I thought, well, let’s see if we can shoot out that left rear tire, and maybe that would slow him down,” Wright told Oklahoma City’s KOCO News 5. “I was just afraid that if he got back out on the highway, he’d probably, you know, he might kill somebody. So at any rate, it wasn’t any big deal. It was a matter of just … not wanting him to get hurt or not wanting anybody else to be hurt as well.”
After the incident, pastor Wright was briefly detained by police and then released.
Officers finally caught up to Hager after a long chase across Oklahoma City Metro during which the suspect posted live video of his chase to Facebook.
In the expletive-laced video, Hager smokes a cigarette while driving erratically, telling his horrified Facebook friends, “I’m going to need an attorney, for real.” He explains that he was released from prison a year ago and hasn’t “had no fun. I haven’t gone out one time. I just wanted to get some assets. I’m tired of restarting.”
Hager explained that he wanted to leave Oklahoma County and get to Cleveland County, because, he claimed, the jails in Oklahoma County were filled with bedbugs.
When a driver of another car blares his horn at Hager, he shouts out his window: “Hey! You don’t see me in a high-speed chase? I’m in a high-speed chase, bro! You gotta move over!”
With sirens blaring behind him, Hager shouts, “Red lights! Everybody watch out!”
As he continues to evade police, he tells his viewers, “They’re gonna beat my a– if I pull over.”
Hager tore through fields, even stopping to do donuts in the truck. He backed into a large pond in Cleveland County, where his truck got stuck in the mud.
When Hager jumped out of his truck and took off running, an officer shot him with a Taser. Hager fell to the ground and police arrested him.
KOCO News 5 filmed the arrest. Hager could be seen with Taser prongs still embedded in his body. One prong protruded from the back of his neck as he was hauled off in handcuffs.
That’s when Hager told the police he was on a joy ride and “just having fun.”
Hager, who has a modeling profile, became addicted to drugs when he was 18, according to sources who spoke with Oklahoma’s News 4. He was previously accused of writing a bad check, bail jumping and cocaine possession.
