Study: Young male refugees fueling violence in Germany

A new study has attributed a rise in violent crime in Germany to the massive influx of mostly young, male migrants in recent years.

The study, led by criminologist Christian Pfeiffer and published by the Zurich University of Applied Sciences, relies on data from the state of Lower Saxony to assess the impact of refugees on crime in the years 2015 and 2016, reported the Associated Press.

The German government-funded study, published Wednesday, attributes a 10.4 percent increase in violent crimes in Lower Saxony in those two years almost entirely to refugees.

In fact, the study concluded 92 percent of the additional crimes reported could be attributed to the increase in the number of refugees in the country.

The authors point out young, male refugees traveling alone are more likely to commit crimes if they have no hope about their future – meaning if they have little chance of being allowed to remain in Germany legally.

The study says most of the refugees came to Germany from Muslim countries that are "characterized by male dominance" and an acceptance of a "macho culture" that can justify violence.

Verena Herb, a Families Ministry spokeswoman, said the study demonstrates the need for better efforts at integration in Germany, according to the AP.
