In the wake of Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch’s announcement that he would retire early next year at the end of his term, there have been numerous reports suggesting former Massachusetts Gov. and Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney was considering running for that seat.
Romney himself took to Facebook to offer his gratitude to Hatch, but did not disclose his own intentions.
“I join the people of Utah in thanking my friend, Senator Orrin Hatch for his more than forty years of service to our great state and nation,” Romney stated.
“As Chairman of the Senate Finance and Judiciary Committees and as the longest-serving Republican Senator in U.S. history, Senator Hatch has represented the interests of Utah with distinction and honor. Ann and I wish Senator Orrin Hatch and his loving wife Elaine all the best in their future endeavors.”
But those who read Romney’s remarks on Facebook are not being shy about their opinion of him, with many strongly urging him not to run.
“Romney you are washed up, you couldn’t win the presidency which you could have easily won and now you want to be a senator? You are Obama and Obama is you,” wrote Shawn Jaryno. “You are not a conservative or a constitutionalist. Now you may run because Why? It’s an easy win so you can add back to the swamp.”

Many others had similar thoughts opposing an possible Senate candidacy by Romney:
Steve Caffrey: “You can win in Utah but President Trump does not need another John McCain type malcontent keeping him from getting his Agenda thru. Don’t run we don’t need you.”
Mary O’Brien Knight: “We are grateful for his service, but do not want you representing the people. You are part of the problem in the country. You are the deep state.”
Bowden E Russell: “Mr. Romney I hope you reconsider running for Senate and do not do this foolish endeavor. You’re hated by the Republican Party especially the Republican base. Your few friends in the Republican party or traitors and sellouts like Jeff Flake from Arizona and Senator McCain.”
Dave McCall: “You keep making public statements declaring that bad things are good and good things are bad. I am almost convinced you ran in 2012 to ensure Obama stayed in office. You quite literally handed the election back to him in the last 2 debates. If not you are just a [weak] feckless wannabe.”
Josh Russek: “Mitt is a wolf in sheep’s clothes. Shame he is bit all you need do is go back to his ineffectiveness in his bid for the presidency. Stay a family man Mitt and leave politics to Americans with a real set.”
William Miller: “[S]tay home and count your millions you crud. I voted for you once now I will send every dollar I can spare to whom ever opposes you. You sold out our President numerous times already with your stupid letters and ugly speeches – of course between all this disgusting behavior, you groveled on your knees with hat in hand to be secretary of state. You are not even 1/1000th the man that President Trump is. Your a photo copy of Jeb Bush … Ughhhh – We need new champions in the Republican party not you.
Deanna McGaha Wauhob: “I pray you are not planning to step in to his spot. You burned your bridges with me after my total support and standing up for you to become president. You are strictly trying to re-establish the government where Trump is uncovering the misdeeds of the establishment in Washington. You want power too much – it seems like a revenge for your loss of confidence of the American people. Sorry – I once thought you were the answer, but you have showed your leopard spots now.”
Christopher Harrison: “Utah voters, please remember that as of January 2, 2018, Mitt Romney still identifies as being from Massachusetts on Twitter. Any political moves going forward from him will be only to further his own lifestyle, and not the people of Utah.”
Joan Rizzo: “Mr. Romney, I voted for you for President, but now urge you not to run. We do not need one more Republican in office who will not support the President. Your time has passed and you are no longer part of the solution.”
Thomas J. Wenner: “I don’t think I can vote for you Mr. Romney. We need someone who will work with our President. We don’t need a representative that ignores the will of the American people and disrespects the office of President of the United States. I will aggressively campaign against you.”
Cathy Wadkins: “Once upon a time Mitt I thought you would of made America a awesome president, but you showed your true colors how you got on board with the Establishment and went against Trump, so I have no use for anything you say.”
Joshua Rainville: “Romney is not Utah’s savior. I hope someone with sense opposes him on the Republican ballot. Don’t anoint him (remember what happened to Hillary) He’s just as corrupt.”
Charles T. Moore: “Mitt Romney, please don’t run for the US Senate. Please allow another true conservative and Trump supporter to fill his seat. We voted for you in 2012 but you ran a loser’s campaign. Please don’t try to enter public office again. We have too many RINO’s now.”
Frank Lundie: “Go away, Mitt. Had you really wanted to win, you’d have unloaded all the ammo you had on Obama. Instead, YOU LOST and Obama left a vacuum for ISIS to fill. Millions are dead or displaced because YOU LOST. GO QUIETLY.”
Debbie Alpers Aponte: “Mr. Romney after reading all of these posts it is my considered opinion that you would be a fool to run. You have no credibility! You are part of the deep state that Trump is trying to dismantle. We the people do not need more of the same Repubocrat swampdwellers. But thx anyway.”
However, the sentiment was not completely bad for Romney, as a handful of commenters indicated he should seek the Senate seat of Hatch, or even higher office:
Joel Watson Jr.: “Run, Mitt, Run! A Senator’s job isn’t to support the President no matter what, it’s to represent the people of his or her state, and that’s exactly what Mitt would do.”
Ronald Aguila: “What the republic is being subjected to by this administration is unacceptable and ludicrous. Please do what you can to amend this catastrophe that we find ourselves in. RUN FOR HIS SEAT.”
Jordan Smith: “It was time for Hatch to go. I hope you can be the next Senator from Utah! America needs your leadership right now! Specifically, we need more republicans who are willing to stand up to this reckless and criminal president.”
Lee Davis: I think Senator Romney has a nice ring to it, but President Romney sounds even better. Run, Mitt, Run!!”
