Driver slams into 5 people in San Francisco

(SFGATE) — A man ran over five people who were trying to steal his vehicle Wednesday morning in San Francisco in a hit-and-run that left one person dead, sources said.

Police initially said the incident came as a result of the driver getting into a fight with the five people around 10:30 a.m. near Illinois and 24th streets. Authorities then revised their report to note that the victims were fighting amongst themselves.

However, sources familiar with the investigation told The Chronicle that the victims were hit as they tried to break into and steal the driver’s vehicle. The industrial area where the incident took place was listed as a hot spot for auto burglaries in a recent Chronicle investigation.
