I think it goes all the way back to the 1960s! As a young, unworldly 18-year-old bride, I joined my military husband at Ft. Lee in Virginia in May of 1967. We were there for almost seven months.
When I was eight months' pregnant, along with a neighbor, walked off the military installation where we lived and started to cross the street to go to a hamburger joint to get the standard burger, fries and coke. We made it to the middle of the street across from the post and several young Democrat hooligans, hoods, whatever you wanted to call them, who threw bricks, bottles, garbage from their meals that they got to eat in peace without the MPs asking them to move along (they were protesting the Viet Nam War).

My friend who was just four months pregnant lost her baby, I was pushing the baby of another friend who was shopping and I was babysitting, and one of the broken bottles hit him on his tiny head. Then I was hit in the head and there was so much blood I couldn't tell whether it was all mine or all the baby's. We turned around and had to run back on post. Boy! They sure showed us our place in their squirrely little Podunk town.
I was never so happy in my life when my husband was transferred to a closed post in the Huachuca Mountains in Arizona. The people of the town of Sierra Vista were so warm and so welcoming to all military personnel and their dependents. It was like day and night! We had gone from the darkness of violence and incivility to the light of appreciation, thanks for serving, "you are welcome here." We hit civilization again!
I've never been back to Virginia nor do I ever want to go back – and the Little Red Hen incident justifies that decision. There were signs in some parks in Virginia that said "Dogs and military, stay off the grass." They didn't last for long after we arrived there. But the two small towns were both supported by the military; one was snooty, elitist, uncivilized leftist loons even in 1967, and the one in Arizona was caring, welcoming, kind and they went out of their way to accept us. The leftist loons have only gotten loonier and more uncivilized.
